Visiting Appointments Scheme

 The following types of visitors are available through the department

Visiting Academics

The Department of Media and Communications Visiting Appointments Scheme provides a way for academics and practitioners from other institutions to conduct research, or be involved in other academic-related activities in collaboration with the Department of Media and Communications. Visiting academics/practitioners are given full access to the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Library and other ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ resources. No fee is payable to ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ and likewise no salary is paid by the School for these appointments.

Timeline, roles and expectations for visitors

Application Process
• All prospective Visiting Academics must submit a formal application.
• Each academic staff member may host up to two Visiting Academics at any one time.

Visit Duration
• Visiting periods typically range from 6 months to 3 years, depending on the nature of the visit and departmental approval.

Access and Permissions
Approved Visiting Academics will be granted the following:
• An ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Library card
• An ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ email address
• Access to the department's building and, where appropriate, shared office space

Expected Contributions
Visiting Academics are expected to actively contribute to the department’s research culture. This includes:
• Attending departmental Research Dialogues and other relevant academic events
• Producing at least one departmental blog post and/or short written output (e.g. research summary or think piece) during their visit

 

How to apply

Step 1

Complete the Visiting Appointments Proposal Form, so that your application can be considered formally by the Department.

  • Please note that only Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors can sponsor visitors under the Visiting Appointments Scheme.
  • Please note that appointments are a minimum of twelve weeks and a maximum of three years.

Step 2

 

Your application will be considered by the Department and, if successful, will be submitted formally to our Human Resources Division to be approved by the Vice-Chair of the Appointments Committee. You should hear from the School within 8 weeks of your application if it has been successful.

Step 3

If your application is successful, you will be contacted by the Department to notify you, and you will be required to complete a Visitor Details Form. 

Step 4

On completion of the Visitor Details Form, a formal letter will be issued from Human Resources.

 

Guests

For those wishing to collaborate with faculty for a shorter timeframe, academics and practitioners can apply to be a guest of the department. Faculty should extend a personal invite to their respective guests. 

Please notify Media.Visitors@lse.ac.uk of the invitee so an ancillary card request can be submitted.

Application Process
• Guests must be formally invited by a member of academic staff.
• No formal application is required beyond the internal invitation process.

Visit Duration
• Guest visits typically last from 1 week to 3 months.

Access and Permissions
Depending on the nature and duration of the visit, Guests may be granted:
• An ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Library card
• An ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ email address (if required)
• Access to the department’s building

Expected Contributions
Guests are invited to contribute to the department’s intellectual community by:
• Submitting a departmental blog post (optional, but encouraged)
• Attending Research Dialogues and other relevant academic events
