ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Summer School is intense, exciting, and over in the blink of an eye. Before I arrived, I read all the usual tips - stay on top of readings, network with classmates, explore London. But there are some things no one tells you, so I am going to do so and help you to truly shape your experience.

London Weather is Unpredictable - Pack for Everything

One minute, it’s sunny, and you’re sweating through your shirt. The next, it’s pouring, and you’re regretting not bringing an umbrella. London weather has no rules, so pack layers, carry an umbrella at all times, and wear comfortable shoes - you’ll be walking a lot, whether it’s to class or running for cover in a surprise downpour.

What many people don’t realise is that the temperature can vary drastically even within a single day. Mornings may be chilly, afternoons warm, and evenings cool again. If you’re planning to explore the city after class, you don’t want to be stuck in the wrong outfit. A light jacket or a hoodie that fits in your bag is a lifesaver.

The Best Conversations Happen in Wright’s Bar

Wright’s Bar is a humble little café on campus, and it’s where the magic happens. Want to discuss economic theory over a sandwich? Debate real estate trends with a cup of tea? This is where ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ students, from undergrads to PhD candidates, all mix together. Trust me, you’ll learn just as much here as you do in class.

Forget the Tube - Walk Everywhere

Yes, the London Underground is efficient, but some of the best moments happen when you just wander. Walk to class from Covent Garden, take a detour through the Strand, get lost in Soho after dinner. London is best experienced on foot, and every route comes with a new discovery.

There are hidden gems all around the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ campus. A random alley might lead you to an independent bookstore, a historic pub, or a quiet park perfect for reading between classes. Plus, walking lets you absorb the city in a way that you can’t through public transport. The architecture, the street performers, and the occasional political protest - you’ll get a real sense of London’s energy just by strolling through it.

Don’t Just Network - Make Friends

Everyone talks about networking at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳, but the real win is forming genuine friendships. Your classmates aren’t just future colleagues - they’re future travel buddies, business partners and lifelong friends. Some of the most unexpected conversations (like whether Greggs sausage rolls are overrated) turn into lasting connections.

Building relationships is one of the most rewarding parts of Summer School. Beyond the academic environment, you’ll find people who share your interests, ambitions and maybe even your sense of humour. Whether it’s bonding over a tough assignment or planning weekend trips together, these friendships can extend far beyond your time at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳.

Say Yes More Than You Say No

Midweek pub quiz? Go. Late-night study session that turns into a deep chat about life? Stay. Random opportunity to sit in on an ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ lecture outside your course? Take it. The best part of Summer School isn’t just what’s on the syllabus - it’s everything happening around it.

One of my best memories was saying yes to a spontaneous weekend trip to Bath with classmates I barely knew. That trip turned into one of the highlights of my summer. Similarly, attending guest lectures and student events led to eye-opening discussions and unexpected opportunities.

Plan Your Free Time, But Stay Flexible

With so much happening in London, it’s tempting to plan every minute. While it’s good to have a list of places you want to see, leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best experiences happen when you least expect them - a pop-up market you stumble upon, a free concert in Trafalgar Square, or a last-minute theatre ticket to a West End show.

ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Summer School is more than just an academic experience - it’s an opportunity to grow, explore, and connect. If you go in with an open mind, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, you’ll leave with more than just knowledge - you’ll leave with memories that last a lifetime.
